Interstice logo

Interstice is a prototypical furniture system, which seeks a different approach to the way we traditionally own and use objects. Developed as a response to our overtly disposable culture, the ideas behind these designs challenge the notions of linear production and planned obsolescence.

In its current line of production, Interstice is a series of multifunctional furniture pieces that can be completely disassembled and re-assembled with components swapped out. This enables the pieces to fulfill a variety of needs over time. The hardware is designed like jewelry: universal components function with ease and also have an aesthetic presence in the overall design.

The materials are luminous and textural, with each piece being fully sustainable both in material and process. Materials fall into one of 3 categories:

bio-nutrients (which nourish the soil and naturally biodegrade) techno-nutrients (which may be infinitely re-used without degrading in quality), or re-used materials (that have had a previous life somewhere else). Current materials include bamboo plywood, eco-resin, wool felt and salvaged sheet goods.

Interstice is also sustainable as system, whereby pieces are designed in components, without glue, stain or chemical finishes. When a client’s needs or spatial conditions change, pieces may be re-worked to respond to the new conditions, and anything unused may be exchanged.
